Description
Upwork, the world's work marketplace, is seeking a Senior Staff Back-end Engineer to join our Ads & Monetization Team. This team drives our fastest-growing revenue stream and requires expertise in backend development, database management, and financial technology systems. This is a contract position through Upwork's Hybrid Workforce Solutions (HWS) Team.
Responsibilities
Collaborate with engineering, data science teams, and product managers to develop top-quality products.
Work with product management and engineering teams to plan and deliver projects on time.
Translate broad goals into actionable plans considering trade-offs.
Design, build, and deliver robust systems.
Handle complex projects with minimal guidance.
Participate in code reviews and design reviews.
Mentor junior engineers and promote best practices.
Improve code quality and reduce technical debt.
Monitor system performance and respond to incidents promptly.
Utilize collaborative tools for communication and project management.
Develop scalable and robust server-side logic, databases, and APIs.
Use programming languages such as Java or Kotlin for backend development.
Optimize backend systems for performance and reliability.
Implement security measures to protect backend systems and data.
Requirements
8+ years of professional experience in software development.
Proven experience in leading complex projects from start to finish.
Proficiency in Java and RESTful services.
Expertise in writing maintainable unit tests.
Deep knowledge of relational databases and distributed systems.
Experience with high-load web applications and scalability issues.
Background in financial technology or ledger systems.
Strong understanding of software architecture principles.
Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in English.
Familiarity with AWS and cloud environments.
Eagerness to learn new technologies.
