Upwork offers a crucial role for a Senior Staff Back-end Engineer to join our Ads & Monetization Team. The chosen candidate will drive backend development, database design, and maintain compliance with financial technology. This engagement is through Upwork’s Hybrid Workforce Solutions Team, supporting various aspects of the company’s business globally.

Responsibilities
Collaborate with Engineering, Data Science teams, and Product Managers to create outstanding products for our users.
Participate in planning and executing high-quality projects with product management and engineering teams.
Translate larger visions and features into actionable plans, considering trade-offs to achieve goals.
Design, develop, test, and maintain scalable server-side logic, databases, and APIs.
Conduct code reviews, share ownership of code domain, and improve code quality.
Handle complex projects with minimal guidance, potentially leading to strategic changes.
Mentor junior engineers, promote best practices, and write supporting documentation.
Monitor system performance, respond to incidents promptly, and participate in on-call rotations as needed.
Requirements
8+ years of professional experience in software development.
Proficiency in Java and RESTful services.
Expertise in writing well-structured unit tests.
Deep knowledge of relational databases and distributed system design.
Proven track record in building and supporting high-load web applications.
Experience with financial technology or ledger systems.
Strong understanding of software architecture principles.
Proven ability to work with cross-functional teams.
Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
Comfortable working with AWS and cloud-based environments.
Eagerness to learn new technologies continuously.
Experience with implementing virtual currencies, ledger systems, or financial technology.
